In its layout it really is an English "cottage"-the "modest abode," as the wife of Nicholas I put it. But the facade was a bold experiment for its day, applying Gothic church architecture to a private home. Art Nouveau, 70 years before Art Nouveau.3
Cast-iron grilles painted white(!) form an arcade. Some of the house's windows are a different color.4
Negative space in the wide lancet arch on the east side. Remarkable what a majestic loggia emerged from such a small house.5
A sharp triangular gable with decorative imitation brackets. The mix of gables and arches gives the roofline a complex contour all around the house-something sorely missing in cottages with a hip roof and its dull horizontal line.Facade #3671 from Archi.Capital base.
