Review :
The right-hand garden front of the famous Cottage Palace in Alexandria Park. Here's another view. There are good photos at spb-guide.ru.

In its layout it really is an English "cottage"-the "modest abode," as the wife of Nicholas I put it. But the facade was a bold experiment for its day, applying Gothic church architecture to a private home. Art Nouveau, 70 years before Art Nouveau.

Cast-iron grilles painted white(!) form an arcade. Some of the house's windows are a different color.
4
Negative space in the wide lancet arch on the east side. Remarkable what a majestic loggia emerged from such a small house.
5
A sharp triangular gable with decorative imitation brackets. The mix of gables and arches gives the roofline a complex contour all around the house-something sorely missing in cottages with a hip roof and its dull horizontal line.
