#975. Decorative Modernist Facade with Arched Balconies and Floral Ornamentation

Before us is an impressive example of early 20th century modernist architecture, presumably in the Catalan Modernisme (Art Nouveau) style. The facade exhibits the characteristic ornate decorativeness and plasticity of forms typical for this architectural movement.

The upper part of the facade is adorned with four identical figurative parapets with undulating outlines, decorated with floral motifs — stylized flower garlands and plant ornaments. This technique creates a rhythmic silhouette of the building against the clear blue sky.

Four balconies with elegant wrought iron railings are symmetrically placed and supported by decorative consoles with vegetal ornamentation. Above each balcony is an arched opening, richly embellished with relief stucco in the form of scrolls and floral motifs. The columns on either side of the arches add additional depth and architectural expressiveness to the facade.

The window openings have traditional wooden shutters — some open, others closed — which adds picturesqueness to the facade and emphasizes its inhabited status. The color palette is restrained, predominantly light shades, which is characteristic of Mediterranean architecture.

Overall, this facade represents an excellent example of how functional building elements can be transformed into a work of decorative applied art while maintaining their practical significance.
