Polychrome Facade with Majolica Decoration in Neo-Russian Style

#5806. Polychrome Facade with Majolica Decoration in Neo-Russian Style

Before us is a magnificent example of a decorative facade executed in the traditions of Russian historicism with elements of folk style. The building facade demonstrates rich polychrome majolica decoration, characteristic of the Neo-Russian architectural direction of the late 19th century.

The facade composition has a pronounced hierarchical structure with a central kokoshnik-shaped part crowned by a heraldic symbol. In the center of the coat of arms on a blue background, there is a tower or chapel, framed by floral ornaments and topped with a crown – likely a city or regional emblem.

Of particular value is the intricate floral ornament executed in red and green hues against a golden background. The motifs resemble traditional Russian embroidery and folk art. Kokoshniks of various sizes, arranged symmetrically, create a rhythmic pattern that enhances the decorative effect. The curved lines of the kokoshniks with their pointed keel-like completion contrast with the rectangular basis of the brickwork.

The roof of the building is made of green tiles or glazed plates, further emphasizing the structure's affiliation with the national-romantic direction in architecture. Such richness of decorative ornamentation was characteristic of public buildings, banks, shopping arcades, and apartment buildings of the late 19th – early 20th century.
