Elegant Eclectic Facade of a French Lyceum with Rich Decorative Ornamentation

#2708. Elegant Eclectic Facade of a French Lyceum with Rich Decorative Ornamentation

Before us stands an impressive facade of the "Lycée Privé Maso" - a private lyceum executed in the French eclectic style of the late 19th - early 20th century. The building demonstrates characteristic features of rich French architecture with elements of Beaux-Arts and Neoclassicism.

The facade is symmetrically organized and divided into four tiers. The lower tier is designed as a rusticated foundation with three arched entrances, the central one featuring large green gates with decorative elements. The second tier is distinguished by rhythmically placed windows with green frames and expressive semi-circular balconies on the sides, adorned with elegant stone balustrades. On the third tier, a triple window dominates the center, with side windows accentuated by classical pilasters and a frieze with ornamental carvings.

The building is crowned by a mansard roof with slate covering and a characteristic central pediment decorated with sculptural details and a small round window. Numerous decorative elements give the facade special picturesqueness: stucco cartouches, consoles, capitals, cornices, and bas-reliefs, demonstrating the high craftsmanship of stonemasons of that era.

The color scheme of the facade is built on a combination of warm sandy tone of stone and muted green color of wooden elements, which is typical for the southern French architectural tradition. This exquisite example of institutional architecture from the French provinces elegantly combines prestige, functionality, and aesthetic perfection.
