Monumental Façade of the Chicago Board of Trade: Art Deco, Clock and Symbolism of Financial Power

#1042. Monumental Façade of the Chicago Board of Trade: Art Deco, Clock and Symbolism of Financial Power

The image shows a fragment of the façade of the historic Chicago Board of Trade building. The façade is constructed of light-colored stone in the monumental Art Deco style, characteristic of significant American commercial buildings from the first half of the 20th century.

The central element of the composition is a large clock with Roman numerals on a turquoise-colored dial. The timepiece is framed by stone sculptural figures symbolizing trade and prosperity - two monumental statues in a quasi-classical style, holding agricultural attributes (sheaves), which indicates the historical connection of the exchange with agricultural commodities trading. Above the clock is a sculpture of an eagle - a traditional American symbol of strength and power.

At the bottom of the façade, the monumental inscription "CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE" is carved in large letters in a classical style. The entire façade composition demonstrates the strength, stability, and significance of the financial institution, typical of the architecture of American trade and financial centers of the early 20th century.
