The interior plays against the exterior: warmer wood for the people living inside; smooth, cool-toned stone, a kind of fortress of the modern city, for passersby.2
An urban lot, and a narrow one. But it was a good call to carve out a small garden by taking volume away from the house itself. Almost all the windows look onto this little inner courtyard. See photos on the architects' website. A tree will probably eventually grow there up to the second floor.3
