Decorative Indian Door Portal with Polychrome Facade

#740. Decorative Indian Door Portal with Polychrome Facade

Before us is an impressive example of a decorative door portal, likely from Northern India. The facade composition represents a skillfully decorated entrance with characteristic elements of Hindu architectural tradition. The doorway is framed by a richly adorned portal in a greenish-yellow color, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding light wall.

The central element of the composition is a massive green door divided into geometric square panels with decorative metal fittings. The door has a symmetrical structure with a vertical strip of ornament down the center. Around the doorway unfolds a lush pictorial framing with floral motifs — elegant red flowers with green stems and leaves winding against a yellowish background.

Above the door is a special decorative panel depicting a deity (presumably Ganesha) in the center, flanked by smaller figures. The upper part of the portal is crowned by a horizontal frieze with vegetal ornament, enclosed in a decorative frame. On both sides of the lower part of the facade are stylized images of flower baskets, complementing the overall composition.

All this vibrant polychrome decoration contrasts with the rough texture of the surrounding wall, creating the impression of a precious ornament inlaid into a simple surface. Despite visible signs of age, the facade retains the vividness of colors and meticulousness of detail execution, demonstrating the high craftsmanship of local artisans.
