Prairie School Brick Residence: Horizontal Facade with Expressive Cornices

#450. Prairie School Brick Residence: Horizontal Facade with Expressive Cornices

Before us stands a magnificent example of Prairie School architecture, characteristic of the early 20th century. This two-story brick residence features expressive horizontal lines and wide roof overhangs – signature elements of the style popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers.

The facade is constructed of reddish-brown brick with contrasting light stone elements. Particularly notable are the wide horizontal cornices with distinctive copper-green edging, which create a pronounced "layered" silhouette for the building. The roof has a gentle slope and generous eaves that visually connect the house to the surrounding landscape – a key principle of the Prairie style.

Window openings are organized in horizontal groups with characteristic geometric division of glass sections, reinforcing the horizontality of the composition. The asymmetry of the facade is noteworthy while still maintaining an overall balance. The front porch is supported by substantial square columns, and the brick chimney stack stands clearly as a vertical accent, counterbalancing the predominant horizontal elements.

The brick pathway leading to the entrance and the side driveway area with its colonnade continue the theme of organic integration of the building with its environment. Delicate landscaping complements the architectural composition without overwhelming it and emphasizes the purity of lines.
