Polychrome Half-Timbered Facade from the 17th Century with Decorative Paintings

#2622. Polychrome Half-Timbered Facade from the 17th Century with Decorative Paintings

Before us stands an outstanding example of a half-timbered building in the North German style, likely from the early 17th century, as evidenced by the date 1607 inscribed on the facade. This is a typical architectural specimen found in Hanseatic cities.

The building is distinguished by its magnificent decorative finish. A triangular pediment crowns the facade, adorned with numerous carved elements and paintings in the polychromatic palette characteristic of Northern Germany: the yellow background of the walls contrasts with rich red, blue, and brown decorative motifs. Particularly notable are the patterned bands with floral and geometric ornaments between the floors.

The facade is organized symmetrically, with evenly spaced windows with white frames that create a pleasing contrast with the rich color scheme of the walls. On the lower tier, there is a decorative inscription "SOLI DEO GLORIA" (Glory to God Alone), indicating the religious context of the era. The facade also preserves an inscription with the names of the owners or builders: "SANDER SCHELRIFER MEITER FECHT MARGARETHE SCHELRIFER VXOR 1607".

A characteristic feature of such houses is the visual highlighting of the wooden frame against the background of the wall infill, creating a unique rhythmic pattern. The craftsmanship of woodcarvers and artists of that time transformed a functional building into a true work of art that has preserved its authenticity to this day.
